The woman who upset Indian officials after she walked with the country’s Olympic team during the athletes’ parade at the opening ceremony has apologised for her “error of judgement”.
Madhura Nagendra gatecrashed the Indian contingent as they made their way around the stadium’s track in east London.
She was dressed in red and blue in complete contrast to the female members who were wearing yellow saris and blue blazers.
Ms Nagendra, identified as a Bangalore student by local media, was seen in front of millions of viewers worldwide walking alongside flag-bearing wrestler Sushil Kumar, smiling and waving as she went.
London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said she was one of the volunteers who had been part of the cast of the show and became “over-excited”.
Ms Nagendra said: “Considering the fact that it is a huge event they had thousands of people across the globe working towards it, in an error of judgement, I resulted in walking with the athletes. In the eventuality I have hurt the sentiments of my people, my brothers and sisters for which I extend my apologies.”
She added: “Of course I have realised the mistake, as a strong young individual I have come up in front of my whole country to apologise and tell them what has happened.
“I claimed that I have not breached the security, which was stated earlier in the media, I have not trespassed, I have not gate crashed.
“I am a part of the casting committee and accepting the fact that yes I have hurt the sentiments of my people, that is why I am coming across and I am telling my people that yes I understand it was a mistake and I apologise for the same.”
India’s chef de mission P K Muralidharan Raja said they had taken “strong exception” to the woman’s actions.
He added: “She had no business to walk in with the Indian contingent and we are taking up the issue with the organisers.
“We don’t know who she is and why she was allowed to walk in. It is a shame that she was with the athletes in the march past.
“The march past is for the athletes and officials attached to the contingent. We are totally taken by surprise how a person could just intrude into the track.”
