The Mayor of London Boris Johnson says “lots” of Olympic Games lanes in the capital have been “turned off” to speed up the flow of traffic.
He said it was because many officials, including the head of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge, were taking buses and trains instead.
“We’ve been able to turn off a lot of the Games lanes because so many people are going by public transport,” said Mr Johnson. “A lot of the Olympic bureaucrats who could go in the Games lanes are doing that. “Jacques Rogge himself today used the DLR, I’m proud to say, and was conveyed in stately style!”
The lanes have been created for Games officials and athletes to help them get to and from sporting venues with a minimum of fuss.
Mr Johnson was speaking after travellers in London were warned to brace for potential delays on roads and the rail network on the first working day of the Olympics.
Transport for London (TfL) is urging commuters to avoid tube stations with multiple lines and leave extra time for their journeys.
They say the the Docklands Light Railway will be particularly busy, along with Canary Wharf and Bank tube stations and Londom Bridge mainline station.
Sporting events are being held across the capital from the Olympic Park and Greenwich in the east to Wimbledon and Wembley Stadium in the west
On the roads a serious accident resulted in the closure of the London-bound section of the M4 between junction 5 at Langley in Berkshire and junction 4b near Heathrow airport in west London.
Long queues built up on the motorway which goes into an Olympic traffic-only Games lane nearer the capital.
There were also jams for drivers at some of the Games lanes sites in London, including the A40 in west London and the Canning Town Flyover in east London.
But TfL said Tube and main line rail services operated well during the morning peak period.
Tonight a part of London Bridge is being closed to departing passengers from 6pm to 10pm to minimise congestion.
It will affect passengers on the Kent-bound services run by the First Capital Connect and Southeastern train companies.
