MPs should debate the “harmful effect” of violent computer games at a time when parents are thinking of buying them as Christmas presents for their children, the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee has said.
Labour’s Keith Vaz said academic research had shown that playing the games regularly led to “physical changes” in the brain.
Mr Vaz said his call was “not about censorship” but was aimed at protecting children.
The Leicester East MP said: “Last week the University of Indiana published research which showed that playing these games regularly resulted in physical changes in the brain.”
He asked Commons Leader Sir George Young: “At a time when parents are thinking of purchasing video games for Christmas, do you not think it’s important to have a debate on this matter?
“This is not about censorship, this is about protecting our children.”
Sir George said he would alert Home Secretary Theresa May to Mr Vaz’s concerns.
