#thenewscompany – Law Minister Anisul Huq today said the government would take steps to amend the country’s criminal procedure code (CrPC) if required in line with the Appellate Division judgment on arrests and detentions.
Talking to newsmen at his office on an apex court verdict, he said the CrPC was amended on different occasions in the past on different contexts and it would be amended again if it was required.
“If the apex court gives any directive regarding law for arrest and detention, we will again amend the CrPC considering the interest of the people,” said Huq, himself a lawyer by background.
The apex court earlier today issued a judgment upholding an earlier High Court verdict restricting the arrest and detention of people under Sections 54 and 167 of the CrPC, rejecting an appeal by the state.
“I am yet to get the copy of the full judgment . . . (but) I think it is necessary to amend the section 54,” the minister said. Huq, however, said it could be “unrealistic” to scrap the section entirely.
