e-News® | The NEWS Company…DHAKA, July 24, 2015 : Updating of voter list will begin in the country tomorrow and will continue till February 10 next year. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Quazi Raqibuddin Ahmad will formally inaugurate the voter list updating activities at district Shilpakala Academy in Narsingdi at 11 am. During the voter list updating, data would be collected about those who are eligible to become voters by January 1 in 2018, meaning those who were born on or after January 1 in 2000.
A target has been fixed to register 72 lakh citizens worthy to be voters during voter list updating this time. The enumerators will go door to door in 514 upazilas to collect data. They will cover at least 200 upazilas in the first phase. The Election Commission (EC) has advised the enumerators to collect his or her phone number, if any citizen worthy to be voter is not found at home. EC officials said voter list updating will take place in three phases in 514 upazilas. It will begin in 189 upazilas on July 25, in 184 upazilas on August 16 and in 141 upazilas on September 7.
Secretary of EC Secretariat M. Sirajul Islam said this voter list updating is taking place as part of an annual programme to develop a flawless and authentic voter database. He sought cooperation of all citizens in this regard. Voter list updating took place last time in the country in 2014. Currently, the number of voters is over 9.62 crore.
