e-News® | The NEWS Company…DHAKA, July 27, 2015 : Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta today urged BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to clarify her stance on the 15th constitutional amendment erasing the caretaker government system as she visibly deviated recently from her protracted demand for reinstating the provision.
“While raising her demand on holding of national polls under a neutral government (instead of a ‘caretaker government’) Begum Zia did not clarify as to whether she has accepted the 15th amendment to the constitution,” he told a discussion on current political scenario in the city.
Sengupta said BNP should explain in clear terms that it had shifted from its long demand for the reintroduction of the caretaker government and that they were now ready to accept holding of national elections in the manner polls are being held in the countries of the constitutional democracy in the world.
A senior parliamentarian and member of Awami League advisory council, Sengupta said simultaneously, Begum Zia must also shoulder the responsibilities of subversive acts unleashed by the BNP-Jamaat combine across the country in its bid to foil the 10th parliamentary elections last year.
Sengupta said BNP should have to accept the 15th amendment to the constitution admitting that they had committed a mistake by not taking part in the process of amending the constitution removing the caretaker system.
“There is no system other than democratic system in the world now and likewise there is no way left other than polls to hand over power. The next parliament polls will be held after expiry of the tenure of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad in accordance with the constitution,”said Sengupta, also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Appreciating the process of election of new leadership of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in its 28th national council, Suranjit Sengupta said, “This election process of Chhatra League would strengthen the country’s democracy further as transparent ballot boxes were used and the leaders were elected through direct ballots of councillors. Other students’ bodies should replicate the election process of Chhatra League.” Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion at the auditorium of Institution of Diploma Engineers at Kakrail in the city.
